
ONEIDA LANGUAGE & CULTURAL PROGRAM
Statement of Program Philosophy or Mission Statement
The Oneida Language & Cultural Centre committee affirms our concern, responsibility and commitment to ensure the preservation of the Oneida language and culture for future generations.
AIMS & OBJECTIVES
The OLCC will strive to provide leadership and cooperate with other community services in the provision of language-oriented and culturally relevant activities by carrying out the following objectives:
To research and document the historical background of the Oneida name, Oneida cultural symbols and other history relevant to Oneida people and distribute such information to the Oneida community.
To provide Oneida language instruction for teachers and teaching assistants to enhance community efforts to meet the immersion policies in our school system.
To assist teachers with language translation for course curriculum, teaching materials and translating /transcribing texts, legends, stories, etc. as required to meet language immersion policies.
To develop and produce an variety of language resource materials including audio cassette recordings, videotapes, correspondence course material, visual aids, orthographic materials, dictionaries, curricular etc.
To provide Oneida language instruction for community members, parents of students, administration staff and community service providers.
To develop a certified Oneida language course to produce fluent Oneida language instructors to fill local Oneida language teaching positions.
To promote Oneida language retention by providing consultation as required and by hosting, coordinating or participating in Aboriginal language conferences.
To develop high quality language resource materials using state of the art design and other available technologies as appropriate.
To coordinate gatherings of fluent speakers as needed to formulate new vocabulary to reflect contemporary developments in our changing world.
To develop and/or promote traditional and contemporary cultural practices such as food production and preservation; craft making; traditional games and stories; ceremonial observances and activities that reflect our cultural distinctiveness.
