ONEIDA PHILOSOPY OF EDUCATION

As one of the First Nations placed on this earth by our Creator, we, the Oneida people have been granted the right and the responsibility to live in harmony with the land and with one another. Part of that responsibility includes the Education of our Children.

 The Oneida Nation maintains that all aspects of the Child physical, mental, social, emotional and spiritual must be considered in the education process. This holistic approach must be a reflection of the values, beliefs, language and culture of the Oneida Nation. Learning will be enhanced through active participation in the classroom and through community involvement in the Education process.

Education is regarded as a life- long process that begins in the cradle and continues through to adulthood. It is the process whereby our unique identity as a Nation is transmitted from one generation to the next. It is, in fact, the key to our survival.

We therefore maintain that the Oneida Nation has an inherent duty to educate our children and that we have a responsibility over the curriculum and the language that is taught.

Update regarding the New School year 10-11

Dear Parents/Guardians and Students:

The summer is now officially half way and there are plans to be completed before the school year begins on September 7.
You will find attached an Consent to Disclose form that must be completed to receive your incentives throughout the school year and have a seat on the bus!

The Education Office must receive the signed consent form by August 25 so we can create the bus routes. You can either drop this off at the Education Office any work day between 8:30 and 4:30 or bring it to the Back to School Fair that will be held on Wednesday, August 25 at the Bear’s Den from 1:30 to 6:00 p.m. Students with signed consents can pick up their credit cheques and participation awards from the 2009-2010 school year.

Representatives from all the schools will be present and there will be information booths from Human Services, Recreation and Youth Programs. Plan to attend this event.

Graduating students and Honour Roll achievers will be recognized at a special Graduation Dinner on Monday, August 23 at Stoneridge Inn. Invitations will be coming in the mail to those students and their families.

Past School Year 2009-2010 Awards:

Attendance at school is important and the Life Long Learning Office wants to remind students that success can be achieved with regular attendance. This is a reminder that our policy is to notify parents/guardians when monthly attendance reports indicate a problem. The warning letter is sent and the student is given the chance to get back on track but if a second report shows no improvement, a second letter is sent indicating that bus privileges are being stopped until a meeting with someone from the Life Long Learning Office has been held and a contract as been signed by the student, the parent/guardian and this office with the promise that the student will attend class. The bus driver will then be contacted to resume bus pick-up.
